Second Media Review

Movie Review on Casino
Brandon Costa

Focusing on the Tangiers, a casino run by Sam "Ace" Rothstein (Robert De Niro) but funded by the Mafia, we are immediately thrust into the action when Ace is blown-up in a car bombing.  The film embarks on an extended flashback of the rise and fall of Ace. Long before he'd ever dreamed of Vegas he rose to a certain sort of fame, back East, by being the best gambler around. Every one of his bets came off , making Ace popular with the local hoods when they fancied a flutter. To protect their interests he was provided with Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci), his guardian angel and pocket sociopath. They were both lifelong friends.

The Mafia and Ace had a terrific scam going, the Mafia would have a guy go in and take money from the room where all of the money would be counted and everyone who worked there would be in on it so no one would get "pinched". But Ace's wife Ginger was also seeing another man who was a pimp and a drug dealer. She would take money from Ace and give it to Lester Diamond (James Woods). So Ace and Ginger towards the middle of the movie had many fights. Ginger didn't know who to turn to so she talked to Nicky about her problems. Then Nickey started getting into drugs and she eventually got into an affair with him which was not good because the bosses back home didn't like it when guys from the same crew were messing around with each others wives.

Eventually the scam gets pinched and the bosses have to go to jail. Then they find out that Nickey was messing around with Ace's wife so they kill him. And everyone who was involved in the scam started ratting people out so the bosses got people to kill them. At the end Ace is in his car starts it and the his hood catches on fire, whoever wired his car to blow up did it wrong so he is one of the only ones to live and the story ends with him in San Diego betting on sports games.

4 out 5 stars.
